Liver Transplantation in Algeria:
Liver transplantation in Algeria is one of the rarest operations currently, as Algeria is striving to implement well-planned strategies to improve its healthcare system and reduce the need for patients to seek liver transplantation abroad. However, at present, this remains a challenging reality due to the severe shortage of transplant experts, with only two available across the entire country. Additionally, there is a lack of sufficient resources, including dedicated transplant centers.
As a result, many complex medical cases, including liver transplantation, are left untreated in Algeria, forcing many Algerian patients to seek medical destinations with high-quality healthcare systems such as France, Belgium, Turkey, or even South Korea. Turkey, for example, is one of the most successful countries in organ transplantations. It is ranked among the top three countries globally for kidney and liver transplants from living donors. This success is due to Turkey’s advanced technological expertise compared to many countries in terms of field experience, according to the President of the Turkish Organ Transplant Coordinators Association. Turkey has trained approximately 3,000 individuals from 76 countries over three years in organ transplantation procedures as part of the International Organ Transplantation Network project.

Patient’s Story
Turkey is now considered the best medical destination globally and the ideal place for such operations due to the high quality of healthcare. Most of its hospitals, accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) – one of the highest certifications that healthcare organizations strive to obtain – are fully equipped with the latest medical facilities, devices, and technologies. They employ the best surgeons with extensive experience in this field. It is crucial for patients suffering from liver failure to receive guidance and advice from a skilled surgeon. Finding an expert and proficient surgeon is not a difficult task for Turkish hospitals, which place significant emphasis on hiring highly qualified surgeons to work in the best medical centers in the world.
Today, there are 45 liver transplant centers in Turkey, including 25 government universities, 8 private universities, 9 private hospitals, and 3 training and research hospitals under the Ministry of Health. Between 2002 and 2014, nearly 7,148 liver transplant surgeries were performed in Turkey, of which 4,848 were from living donors, and 2,304 were from deceased donors, with a success rate exceeding 90%.
Regarding the cost, liver transplantation in Turkey is competitively priced, ranging between 47,000 and 55,000 Euros. Compared to other countries such as Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom, the cost in Turkey is about one-third of the price in these countries, making Turkey an ideal destination for many patients who are about to undergo this operation.
We hope that liver transplantation will soon become available in Algeria, and that the Ministry of Health’s programs for improving the overall healthcare system will be successful.
